Rodeo veterans and multiple-time NFR qualifiers were plentiful in the finals at the National Western Stock Show, but some young blood also won championship buckles in Denver.
The champion in bareback riding won the title on his permit. Even among some established hands, a new pairing in team roping proves fruitful. Team ropers are not the only ones to share a championship, as two tie-down ropers leave Denver as co-champions after Sunday afternoon in the Denver Coliseum.
Bareback Riding
Kooper Heimburg won the National Western after entering with his PRCA permit. Heimburg rode Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Pearl Harbor for an 87-point ride to win the final round. He also won a semifinal round after scoring 86 points on Bailey Pro Rodeo’s Candy Coated.
Team Roping
The new partnership between Luke Brown and Trey Yates gets off to a great start with them winning the team roping in Denver. Brown and Yates stopped the clock at 4.2 seconds in the short round, besting the second place team my two tenths of a second.
Brown and Yates won a go-round in their earlier bracket, and then they placed second in a semifinal round to qualify for the short go. They went to have the fast time in the short go, thus winning the event title.
Saddle Bronc Riding
Zac Dallas wins the National Western saddle bronc title, after an 87.5 point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Ricky Bobby in the final round. En route to short go, Dallas won a round in his bracket, and he placed in the other round.
Dallas moved on to the semifinals, where he won another round. In the short go, Dallas did it again to take the round and the event title by a half point.
Steer Wrestling
Gavin Soileau posted a 4-flat early in the short go, and no one could best his time. Soileau won the event title after qualifying from the Bracket 1. Soileau first split a round win in his bracket, before he slipped into the finals after tying for third place in the semifinals. Soileau made the most of it with a 4.0-second run in the short round.
Tie-down Roping
Brusthon Minton and Trevor Hale became co-champions after splitting the win in tie-down roping. Both roped and tied their calf in 7.3 seconds.
Bull Riding
Wacey Schalla wins the bull riding at the National Western after scoring a 90-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Anthrax in the short go. Schalla won both rounds in his bracket, before a tiebreaker allowed him to advance to the finals, where he won the rodeo.
Stetson Wright finished in second place with an 88-point ride in the short round. Wright’s comeback continues with a round win in the brackets, along with a round win in the semifinals.
Barrel Racing
Carlee Otero wins the barrel racing at the National Western in a horse race with reserve champ Jordan Driver. Both placed first their semifinal round, after both also placed in each round of their bracket. In the final round, Otero’s time of 14.71 seconds barely bested Driver’s 14.76-second run.
