Professional Bull Riders debuted in Pittsburgh, with sold out crowds witnessing bull riding in “The Steel City” for the first time since a local ban on rodeo in 1992.
Australian Brady Fielder went three-for-three to win the event at PPG Paints Arena. Winning the event title boosts Fielder to No. 1 in the PBR Unleash the Beast standings, putting Fielder in the driver’s seat of the world title race.
Fielder, of Clermont, Queensland, posted an aggregate score of 262.25. That total score was a half-point ahead of second place.
Placing second in the event standings is Felipe Furlan of Sales Oliveira, Sao Paulo, Brazil, His aggregate score totaled 261.75 after covering all three of his bulls in Pittsburgh.
Furlan and Fielder were the only two to go three-for-three in the event. Both also went 90-plus in the short round.
Fielder punctuated his event win with a 90-plus ride in the championship round, after placing deep in the long rounds.
Fielder rode UTZ BesTex Smokestack for 90.75 in the championship round. In Round 1, Fielder rode Money Moves for 86.5. That split for seventh place in the first round, and Fielder came back in Round 2 to ride Chuck for 85 points, splitting 10th place.
Fielder and Smokestack then rose to the occasion in the short round for 90-plus, but they were not the only 90-plus ride in Pittsburgh.
Furlan’s ride in the short round was only a half-point behind Fielder’s score in the same round. Furlan lit up the scoreboard after riding Lights Out for 90.25.
Fielder and Furlan came into the short round tied for second place in the draft, giving both great draft picks among the selection of bulls for the short round.
The PBR event in Pittsburgh is not without controversy. A few state lawmakers want to reinstate any local ban on rodeo in the state of Pennsylvania.
